Online Course for School Professionals

The Brain Injury Association of New Jersey and Rutgers Continuous Education have partnered to develop an online course which provides information about working with students with brain injury.  Successful completion of the course provides New Jersey educators with 10 professional development hours (Provider #2782) and 1 Rutgers University CEU. 

Did you Know? 

Each year in the United State approximately 475,000 traumatic brain injuries occur among children ages 0 to 14 years, and brain injury remains the leading cause of death and disability in children and adolescents.  The causes of brain injury are many, but the consequences are similar.  Causes can include, but are not limited to, concussions, motor vehicle crashes, blast injuries, falls, assaults, strokes, infections to the brain, aneurysms, brain tumors, loss of oxygen to the brain. 

The Purpose of this Course is to...

- Increase awareness and understanding of the causes and types of brain injury.
- Increase awareness and understanding of students with brain injuries.
- Assist educators in undertsanding the unique characteristics of students with brain injury.
- Assist educators in how to assess and teach students with brain injury.

 Who Should Take this Course?

This course, created by the Children & Adolescents Committee of the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey, is intended for general and special education teachers, school psychologists, educational consultants, social workers, guidance counselors, principals, speech and language pathologists and other professionals who work with students with brain injuries.  The Children & Adolescents Committee is a long standing committee of the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey dedicated to improving supports and services for children and adolescents affected by brain injury.

What is the Cost?

FREE. There is no cost for taking the course, and successful completion of the course provides educators with 10 professional development hours.

What is Included in the Course?

The contents of this course include information about brain injury, including: types and causes of brain injury, consequences of brain injuries, anatomy of the brain, and assessment and teaching strategies.  Participants will complete three sections of the course that include required readings, a video lecture, and follow-up assessment quizzes.

Section 1: What is Brain Injury

Website resources, readings, and a video lecture will provide an overview of brain injury, including the types and causes of brain injury, the consequences of brain injury and anatomy of the brain.  Participants will complete an assessment exam for comprehension of the material.

Section 2 – How Does Brain Injury Affect Learning?

Website resources, readings, and a video lecture will provide an overview of how brain injury affects a student’s learning, and accommodations and strategies for working with students with brain injury.   Participants will complete an assessment exam for comprehension of the material.

Section 3 – Recognizing & Addressing Cognitive Issues in the Classroom

Website resources, readings, and a video lecture will provide an overview of how brain injury affects a student’s life, and you will be asked to develop accommodations and teaching strategies for that student.  Participants will complete an assessment exam for comprehension of the material.  Participants will also be asked to complete a case study for comprehension of the material.

Educators will gain an increased awareness and understanding of students with brain injuries and their families. With an increase in the identification of students with brain injuries in schools, educators become vital resources for students, colleagues and families. This course will help educators understand the unique characteristics that make this a challenging and interesting population.
