Heads Up! Seniors

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates more than one third of adults age 65 years and older fall each year, with a majority of these falls occurring in the home.  Falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury in New Jersey and the rest of the country.
The Association’s Heads Up! Seniors program is part interactive game show and part presentation—part social activity and part educational session to increase seniors’ awareness of brain injuries through fall prevention and pedestrian safety.  We developed a toolkit and train partners throughout southern New Jersey who offer this program to senior groups.  Meanwhile, Association prevention staff periodically make senior presentations throughout the state.

If you are interested in bringing Heads Up! Seniors to your senior center or organization, please call the Association at 732-745-0200.

Funding

The Brain Injury Association of New Jersey was able to develop Heads Up! Seniors with funding from the New Jersey Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Fund, which was created, in part, to provide for public education and prevention activities related to brain injury.  The TBI Fund is administered by the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Disability Services.

This program was adapted from "Be Headsmart Seniors", a program of the Brain Injury Association of Florida, sponsored by the Florida Department of Health Brain & Spinal Cord Injury Program.
